Text: John 1:1-18
I. JESUS, THE TRUE LIGHT, IS FROM THE BEGINNING (NANG PANIMULA PA, SI HESUS NA ANG TUNAY NA LIWANAG)
A. Vs. 1-4 The Word shows Who He is
- He was with God in the beginning – vs.2
- He is God (discussed last Friday) – vs. 1
- All things were made through Him -vs. 3
- His life became the Light of men – vs. 4
Essence: (Spiritual luminescence)
a. Christians believe that Jesus is GOD
b. God the Father gave Jesus the role and full authority
c. There is no other Savior! (God did not design anyone else, anything else, or any other WAY that man will be saved but JESUS ONLY)
B. Vs. 6-9; 15 There is a witness - John himself testified about Him
- John was sent from God
- He testified about that Light – through Him all men might believe
- John knew that he himself was NOT the light
- John acknowledged the eternal attribute of God - He was in the Beginning and He was coming (in their time – FIRST ADVENT) Note: and He is coming again (in our time) as SECOND ADVENT}
- John as a witness had a powerful ministry, sikat siya sa mga tao and people followed him. When asked if he was the Messiah, John vehemently denied it. He knew WHO he was and the mission that he has is just to bear witness to the light.
Essence: (Spiritual luminescence)
a. No one can claim that he/she or ”their organization” is the True Light
b. As Christians, we continue to testify Who He is as witnesses based on the Word of God alone! Not just on experience, not just out of curiosity but the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit.
c. Jesus is not fake!
CC REFLECTION:
Are you convinced that JESUS CHRIST of the Bible is the TRUE LIGHT OF AND FOR THE WORLD? DO YOU STILL DOUBT THAT JESUS IS THE TRUE LIGHT THAT GOD SENT TO THE WORLD TO SAVE MAN?
II. JESUS, THE TRUE LIGHT, IS REJECTED BY MAN (TINANGGIHAN NG TAO SI HESUS BILANG TUNAY NA LIWANAG)
Vs. 18 God the Father has made Him known and seated at His side
Vs. 10 They did not recognize Him
Vs. 11 They did not receive Him
Vs. 12 They could have believed and received Him but not all did.
Essence: (Spiritual luminescence)
a. God the Father Himself “endorsed” Him and given Him authority
b. The Jews (His own did not recognize Him as the Messiah) had Him face to face but still they refused Him
c. There is opportunity to receive Him in our time. The promise still stands – the right to become children of God --- to be born of God
Everybody desperately needs Jesus Christ! He is the only true Light of life. In Jesus, "the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.''
What would the world be like without the sun? -- Cold, dark and dead, wandering aimlessly about the universe with no hope of ever having life. That's what people are like without Jesus! As the Light of the world, Jesus is the light of life. Don’t reject HIM!
CC REFLECTION:
Do you reject Him, the True Light of Life? Do you believe and accept Him? Do you accept God the Father but not Jesus as sent by God to be the Messiah?
III. JESUS, THE TRUE LIGHT, BRINGS GRACE UPON GRACE (SI HESUS, ANG TUNAY NA LIWANAG, AY MAY DALANG MASAGANANG BIYAYA)
Vs. 13 The nature of our being Born Again is supernatural/spiritual – from
above (This is amazing grace!)
Vs. 14,7 He is full of grace and truth
(This is fullness, not partial only; fullness of grace, fullness of truth!)
Grace – charis from the Hebrew word “hesed” used in OT to speak of
God’s lovingkindness, mercy and faithfulness.
Truth – from Greek word “aletheia” is that which is real, untainted by
falsehood.
Vs. 16 There is one blessing after another in Him!
(In the True Light of Jesus, blessings continue!)
Essence: (Spiritual luminescence)
a. In the True Light, there is absolute truth in His Word – we should not be easily swayed
b. In the True Light, there is fullness of grace – we lack nothing. It is enough!
c. In the True Light, grace follows grace; blessing after blessing
CC Reflection:
Have you been experiencing this “grace upon grace’? His blessing upon blessing?
CONCLUSION: JESUS IS THE TRUE LIGHT, in HIM there is no darkness at all!
Darkness in the Bible usually means not knowing God and His love. But, Jesus promises His light leads to life. Life in the Bible means spiritual life—knowing God and His wonderful love for us and living a life that pleases God. Light gives us direction.
Story of adulterous woman – John 8:12-19
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” (John’s testimony was not valid)
14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
…“If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
John 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Either you accept Him as such and believe Him, or you reject Him altogether.
You choose! If you have chosen, I am sure that blessings are coming your way, grace upon grace, blessing after blessing!
