Opening [Pambungad]

Napakahalaga to build a genuine relationship with your members.

3. Kamustahin ang kanilang mga naging nakaraang lingo – any highlights or challenges.

4. Kamustahin kung nagawa ba nila ang application last week

POMPOUS - having or exhibiting self-importance: ARROGANT; feeling or acting as if you are more important than other people

MAGNANIMOUS – big-hearted, oversized spirit; easily forgiving, not showing resentment showing or suggesting nobility of feeling and generosity of mind; very KIND AND GENEROUS towards an enemy or someone you have defeated; free from petty resentfulness or vindictiveness

BASIS OF MAGNANIMITY

I have been crucified with Christ.

It is no longer I who live,

but Christ who lives in me.

And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20

POMPOUS KING SAUL

• Physique: I Sam. 9:2 a fine young man. There was no Israelite better than he; stood a head taller than any other man in Israel.

• Economic Status: Wealthy

• Skill: Warrior-like

• Spiritual Mantle: ANOINTED BY PROPHET SAMUEL

Saul’s Rulership and Servanthood

FIRST EVENT: I Samuel 13:9-14

“I felt compelled and offered a burnt offering…”

(He lost grace under pressure…natakot, nataranta, nainip sa delayed na sagot ng Dios)

(He decided on his own…bara-bara..)

SHOWED ARROGANCE BY JUSTIFYING HIS WRONG ACT

SECOND EVENT: I Samuel 15

King Saul should LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF GOD AND OBEY HIM.

15:3 God will punish the Amalekites.

COMMAND: UTTERLY DESTROY. DO NOT SPARE THEM.

With pomposity….

vs. 13 “I have performed the commandment of the Lord..”

RESULT OF BEING POMPOUS:

The ARROGANCE led to NON-ACCEPTANCE

I Samuel15:35 “...and the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.”

MAGNANIMOUS KING DAVID

• Physique: I Sam. 16: 12 He had a healthy complexion, attractive eyes, and a handsome appearance.

• Age: young boy

• Tribe: Judah

• Economic Status: tends flock but not too rich

• Skill: Being a shepherd but also mighty man of valor

• Spiritual Mantle: ANOINTED BY PROPHET SAMUEL

David’s Rulership and Servanthood

FIRST EVENT: I Samuel 16:21-22

David did not usurp King Saul’s authority. He waited for his time. Definitely, he was not a power-grabber

(hindi siya nang-aagaw ng kapangyarihan)

Being a harpist, David was sent to King Saul to SOOTHE HIM. He later became King Saul’s ARMOR BEARER.

SECOND EVENT: I Samuel 17:28

HE RECEIVED INSULTS FROM HIS OLDER BROTHERS

17:28 “I know your pride and insolence of your heart…”

SECOND EVENT: I Samuel 17:36

  • he had experienced fighting against enemies

  • he did not use the typical soldier’s weapons

  • he fought with the Philistine giant and killed him single-handedly

I Samuel 18:5

King Saul made David a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul’s officers alike.

I Samuel 18:14

And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

RESULT OF BEING MAGNANIMOUS:

The KINDNESS led to ADVANCEMENT

I Samuel18:5 “... Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully

Saul’s Family Values and Relationships

I Samuel 14

vs. 6 “Nothing restrains the Lord from saving, by many or few.

vs. 10, 12 He declared God’s triumph for them

vs. 24 Saul made a rash oath – “..susumpain ang kakain hanggang hindi pa tapos ang aking paghihiganti.”

Jonathan did not hear the oath; so he tasted the honey to be strengthened

King Saul to son Jonathan: “YOU SHALL SURELY DIE.”

Vs. 45 The people protested: Jonathan has worked with God this day!

Jonathan was spared from the death sentence from his father (hindi na siya naparusahan!)

I Samuel 18:28-29

King Saul treated David as ENEMY

Saul told Jonathan and everyone that they would kill David.

Jonathan knew that his bosom friend David feared God; he defended him before his father;

Saul made an oath before the Lord that David will not be put to death - vs.19:1-6

I Samuel 19

KING SAUL CONTINUED TO HARRASS DAVID. HE WAS SELF-IMPORTANT!

(Pati anak niya, pinagalitan niya dahil dinaya raw siya at pinatakas raw ang kaaway niya.)

David’s Family Values and Relationships

I Samuel 16:13

David was anointed to become king of Israel even if Saul was still reigning, yet he did not ACT RUDELY.

17:20 David was an obedient son to his father Jesse

18:18 David did not take advantage of King Saul giving to him his older daughter Merah

(Take note: HE WAS ALREADY ANOINTED AS KING, he could have been SELF-IMPORTANT!)

Ch.19-20 David honored the friendship he had with Jonathan

(hindi dinadamay ang walang malay)

vs. 41David fell on his face to ground and bowed down three times, they kissed one another, they wept together. David more so!

David showed magnanimity in all his relationships. He did not assert his rights; he did not take advantage; he did not blame anyone for the bad things that are happening to him.

David HE WAS SINCERELY KIND AND RESPECTFUL AND LOVING TO THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM….even those who antagonize him. (‘walang masamang tinapay’)

Saul’s Achievements and Personal Vendetta

ü Saul was chosen by God himself to be the first king of Israel.

ü Saul defeated many of the enemies of his country, including the Ammonites, Philistines, Moabites, and Amalekites.

ü He united the scattered tribes, giving them greater strength.

ü He reigned for 42 years.

ü He was a MIGHTY WARRIOR.

I Sam. 18:7

When the women danced and chanted the lyrics, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands”,

Saul’s jealousy started; the plot to kill David started

I Sam. 24:17

David’s Achievements and Personal Vendetta

David’s confidence was rooted in his complete trust in his God. He would carry this courage into his reign and throughout his life. He knew that God would protect Him and save Him from all his ‘enemies’.

Despite the clear animosity that Saul had towards David, David managed to maintain his integrity and his professionalism. (Hindi siya basta-basta pumapatol!)

DAVID was forgiving despite the insult after insult;

the threat after threat;

the chasing after chasing;

he murder plot after murder plot

Ø Did not kill Saul even if he was given two opportunities

Ø Did not allow his men to touch God’s anointed king

Ø Even addressed King Saul as his father, and explained that

Ø Had no rebellion or evil in mind against King Saul

Ø He even became troubled and confessed his wrongdoing when he cut a hem from Saul’s garme

Ø He even stopped with his face to the ground and bowed when he announced that he was there.

Ø He had all reasons to be pompous, but he was more magnanimous

Ø He allowed the Lord to avenge, not himself, knowing the Lord is The Judge

THEIR JOURNEY

Magnanimity is not based on wealth, upbringing, status in life, power or looks.

It comes from a heart that fears God above all and loves His people.

A follower of Christ is being transformed, from glory to glory, in his attitudes --- pabait nang pabait, pabuti nang pabuti, paganda nang paganda ang kalooban….kahit na nagtatagumpay, kahit na may kaaway o may umaaaway, kahit na alam na tama, kahit nagkamali…maganda ang ugali!

Reflection [Magnilay-nilay]

Prayer [Panalangin]

Closing [Pangwakas]
